The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Re: Manuel Pellegrini West Ham United’s 17th manager

Re: Fornals v defensive mid
There was a post on Twitter by Ex when Gomes had turned us down and Lobotka was rumoured alongside Fornals. The tweet is no longer there but it basically said that the defensive mids linked were not seen as good ‘value’ and that they were more expensive than we expected. That tells you all that you need to know I expect. It’s not just under Pellegrini that we’ve been reluctant to spend on that position and someone still controls the chequebook.

For a premierleague club, not wanting to spend properly on the centre midfield is incredible!

Please enlighten me: How much have Sullivan and Gold spent on the centre midfield since they bought the club?

I'm genuinely interested as this area seems to have been neglected for ages.

Scott Parker was signed by the Icelandic owners am I right?

Our current centre midfielders are Wilshere (free), Rice (free), Noble (free) and Sanchez (cheap)

This area has been criminally neglected through the years don't you agree?

Maddison would just be another lanzini or Fornals, pretty sure he plays with 2 midfielders behind him at leicester

#Who we needed was Maddison.#

Not the type of player we need now when we have Fornals, Wilshere and Lanzini.

He would have been a good signing though when Moyes had the chance to sign him, time will tell if Fornals is better

Who we needed was Maddison. Wasn’t expensive either. Unfortunately that ship has now sailed.

Pellegrini will choose when he leaves and he will become a legendary West Ham manager.

I hope you are wrong goose, we would benefit from longevity with El Pel imo. He´s still building the side he wants and it takes a few years, especially with limited funds.

Chopping and changing will put us backwards

i dont think MP will be in the job come january.

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
I suspect we will have to bring in a physical midfielder with some energy and bite in the January window. He will need to be a competent passer of the ball under Manny.

The old word for a player like that was a defensive midfielder...maybe nowadays you need a string or two more to your bow but whatever you call it that is precisely what we need.

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
The problem with this list though is -

Noble Love him but getting old
Rice Yep decent
Sanchez Old and has he ever been good?
Fornals Early days
Snodgrass Getting on
Wilshere Always injured
Yarma Injury prone apparently
Anderson Inconsistent
Lanzini Hopefully getting back to his best
Antonio Inconsistent

All you need is as per last year Wilshire, Lanzini, Yarmalenko getting injured and you have Noble, Rice, Sanchez, Snoddy, Anderson and Antonio. Not great.,. You need a Scott Parker type as another option.

Plus defensively stop making changes. Think of a back four and stick with it especially the middle two. Balbuena and Diop and give them 10 games plus.

SUM A DING WONG 2:32 Thu Aug 22

I agree. I think we now have a squad with a lot of depth in midfield positions; whether that be attacking or defensive.

Noble
Rice
Sanchez
Fornals
Snodgrass
Wilshere
Yarma
Anderson
Lanzini
Antonio

I mean, fucking hell, if you can't get the right mix from that lot and then get a tune out of them then what the fuck are you doing as a manager?

A lot of managers in the PL would murder to have a selection headache like that.

Yes Darby...
But Kouyate would have been better than Sanchez...

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
I assume that people are using those two as examples of the type of player. I don't think either would improve the squad.

One issue with buying a central midfielder is that it'd put Noble's place in doubt, and I think at the moment he's too important for the team as a whole to leave out.

we got rid of kouyate and obiang because they weren't good enough

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
We're in the position honestly where Reo-Coker circa 2005 would actually improve the team. No disrespect to him but it's shocking that that's probably true right now.

Re: The reason why a centre midfielder wasn't signed this summer
Sorry but some of you are talking nonsense here. Pro football is a business and when you have contracted players for a position and you cannot transfer them then the manager has to make the best of what he's got.

In Centre Mid we have Mark Noble, Jack Wilshere, Declan Rice, Carlos Sanchez, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals and Robert Snodgrass who can and do play centre Mid. OK some are better out wide perhaps.

What I think you all mean is that we could do with a 2nd Declan Rice. That'll happen when we have room in teh squad maybe Jan or next close season...
